Change We Can Believe In: Another Banker Bailout

Since Ben Bernanke’s proclamation that the Fed will embark on a plot to purchase $40 billion in mortgage-backed securities each month, the mainstream media has called it the beginning of “QE3”, but if you ask me, its nothing less than another banker bailout in disguise.

Many have justifiably attacked the Federal Reserve’s policy of printing money as a band-aid which does little to solve the economy in the long term, and this new move has little to do with solving any economic problems at all.  Instead, the policy announced yesterday will merely see the Federal Reserve use our (taxpayer) money to purchase more BAD debt in the form of junk mortgage-backed derivative based securities that have been sold over and over and over again!

This has very little to do with moving the economy forward and will only serve as yet another gigantic wealth transfer from the middle class to the elite who have already stolen billions from the public trust under the guise of saving our nation’s economy.

Its been reported that banks are already sitting on over a trillion and a half in excess reserves, and just like with QE1 & QE2, most of the cash was put on the shelf and not injected into the middle class.

Let’s hop in the Delorean for second and take a trip back in time to 2008 and the dire situation we found ourselves in thanks to pure incompetience from the Bush administration’s handling of the economy after their corporatist interests tanked the economy with fraud and of course not to mention… WAR. WAR. WAR.

Because of our dire economic situation we were sold something called, TARP.  In TARP, the fed paid the banks to withhold loans, because the bailouts have never been about saving the economy for Americans like you and I.  TARP and each measure of Quantitative Easing which followed, has been about propping up stocks for the rich while the real economy average Americans live in everyday goes to hell.

QE1 and QE2 did little if anything to rescue the economy, it simply maintained power to the life-support system which helps our country breathe.  That’s right, since 2008 the United States has had a breathing tube stuck down its throat.  As long as the breathing tube stays in, the elite continue to prosper and the cancer they view on their way of life (the middle class, you and I), well we slowly die off.

Since Quantitative Easing began, the unemployment rate in this country has remained largely unchanged and job numbers are again stagnant, with the latest numbers pointing to even more Americans giving up on looking for work.  Additionally, the “wealth gap” has immensely increased.  This again illustrates how Quantitative Easing has very little to do with helping you and I get back on our feet.

As the George Washington Blog points out, “This is just another bailout for the big banks. (If the government had instead given money directly to the consumer, we would be out of this economic slump by now).”

“Bernanke claims that the main justification for QE3 is to boost employment. This is slightly ironic, since Bernanke’s policies are largely responsible for creating high unemployment in the first place. The real justification is to try to artificially prop up asset prices. But that approach has been proven to be an absolute failure.”

Indeed, the Fed admitted that its new program would do little to alleviate the suffering of jobless Americans.  I’m SHOCKED.

“I want to be clear — While I think we can make a meaningful and significant contribution to reducing this problem, we can’t solve it. We don’t have tools that are strong enough to solve the unemployment problem,” Bernanke said yesterday.

The fact that we haven’t seen massive inflation since the start of the Fed’s so-called quantitative easing policies illustrates how the money is not even being pumped back into the economy.  The only real inflation has been in the luxury sector because the rich are getting richer and spending more while the poor continue to live on or below the poverty line.

QE3 is merely another massive wealth transfer and a tool of waging economic warfare on the poor and middle class, another manifestation of neo-feudalism to destroy America and have the global bankers pose as the saviors.

What I find most disturbing in the wake of all this, are my progressive friends who continue to tell me I should be casting a vote for President Obama in November because he’s on the side of the middle class.  Well, if you think the evidence I’ve presented above makes a strong case for him, then I’ll be happy to point you in the direction of middle class neighborhoods all over this country where you can help him spread the message.  Just use this article for your talking points, I can’t see there being a problem.

Released Government Documents Reveal Shocking Cases Of TSA Groping Genitals

Hundreds of letters of complaint about the TSA’s invasive security procedures released this week under the Freedom of Information Act include numerous horror stories about TSA screeners directly touching people’s genitals during pat downs.

Following a FOIA request in 2010, the non-profit website Governmentattic.org has released the files after a two year battle with the TSA to make them public. The letters can be viewed here.

The letters confirm that the TSA’s new security procedures for “advanced pat downs” include literally touching and in some cases groping the genitals of travelers.

In one incident which occurred on October 29, 2010 at Hobby Airport, Houston, a woman reveals how a TSA screener “putting her hand on my vagina,” caused the woman to “have traumatic reaction that lasted for days.”

In another letter, a woman complains to Congressman Mike Turner about an incident that happened on November 12, 2010 at Dayton International AIrport. The woman explains how a TSA screener, “felt my inner thighs and my vagina area, touching both of my labia.”

The woman relates how she stood for a minute holding her baby without being able to move having been “sexually assaulted by a government official.”

“I began shaking and felt completely violated, abused and assaulted by the TSA agent. I shook for several hours and woke up the next day shaking,” she writes.

Another woman traveling through LAX on November 10, 2010 complains of how she was “sexually assaulted” after a TSA screener touched her vagina.

The files are also replete which cases of TSA screeners fondling men’s genitals.
A veteran of the 10th Special Forces from Bradenton, Florida, who had metal parts in his body as a result of combat injuries reveals how he was subjected to an aggressive pat down “so rough he injured my testicles and (I) was nauseated for hours.”

In another incident which occurred at Phoenix airport, a man with an enlarged prostate reveals how a TSA screener used a metal detecting wand to poke “my penis and my testicles very hard,” despite the fact that the man warned the TSA screener in advance that he suffered pain in his genitals.
(ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW)

In another letter, a former U.S. Air Force officer complains to his Congressman about an experience at Orlando AIrport during which a TSA agent shoved his genitals to one side in order to ensure “it really is your crotch.”

More incidents of TSA agents causing urostomy bags to break are also documented in the files.
As Texas Watchdog reports, “A woman flying out of Detroit Metro Airport tried to explain that after a rather serious cancer surgery she had been fitted with a urostomy bag for the collection of urine. Her searchers ignored her pleas that their rough grabbing and patting would break the seal of the bag and when it did, she wrote, “urine started dribbling down my shirt and into my pants.”

Rape counselors like Amy Menna, a counselor and professor at the University of South Florida have saidthat women who have been sexually assaulted face treatment metered out by TSA screeners that can be “extremely re-traumatizing to someone who has already experienced an invasion of their privacy and their body.” An estimated one in six women in the United States have been the victim of an attempted or completed rape.  And now they face a new threat, government ordered trauma.

It took a staggering four years for the TSA to acquiesce to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by ProPublica’s Michael Grabell back in 2008 which asked the agency to reveal details of passenger complaints.

The TSA has also failed to act on a year-old federal appeals court decision demanding the agency hold public hearings about the privacy and health concerns of the naked body scanner program.

If you've been unsuccessful, you didn't do that on your own

Mark Perry of the Carpe Diem blog touched on the subject briefly a few days ago in response to of course the wise and always subjugating rhetoric of one President Barack Obama.

In not so many words, President Obama said, if you've been successful in this country, you didn't get their on your own, someone else helped you, alluding to that, "someone" being the government. While I agree some of what the President has said in the past on this subject could be taken out of context, its hard to ignore his stance on what government's role should be, or in his eyes; what government's role is.

Here's my take on the role government has played in the lives of so many entrepreneurs and business owners I know. If you’ve been unsuccessful, you didn’t get there on your own. If you were unsuccessful at opening or operating a small business, some government official along the way probably contributed to your failure. There was an overzealous civil servant somewhere who might have stood in your way with unreasonable regulations that are part of our American system of anti-business red tape that allowed you to not thrive. Taxpayers invested in roads and bridges, but you might have faced city council members suffering from a Napoleon Complex who wouldn’t allow you to use them. If you’ve been forced to close a business, it’s often the case that you didn’t do that on your own. Someone else made that business closing happen or prevented it from opening in the first place. You can thank the bureaucratic tyrants of the nanny state. You can thank a government who believes only they can solve the crisis, only they can fix the economy, only THEY can protect you.

This of course, coming after we had eight years of government who believed zero regulation was needed, leading us into the worst economic period since the great depression. Yes, BOTH Democrats and Republicans are responsible for the mess. Roads and bridges are wonderful, but those roads and bridges were being built long before small businesses were forced to pay a "candle" tax at their bar or restaurant in order to pay for them. For long I have been under attack, as people over the years have questioned; Matt, what are you? Are you a republican, are you a democrat? Oh Matt, you're not supporting Ron Paul are you? What happened to you Matt, I thought you voted for Obama? I have and will always continue to be a pragmatic, liberty loving, extreme moderate. There's something about another American thinking for themselves and not identifying a party affiliation or declaring an ideology that makes others who are too intellectually weak to think for themselves uncomfortable. Its because of this that we are forced to choose only between two parties, and two candidates, who are much similar to each other on policy then either side wishes to freely admit. True, their personal stories are far different from one another, but this is not, nor should electing a President ever be a popularity contest.

My solution for all this? I wish I had one that made sense to a growing population of Americans who have come to expect government to solve all of their problems while the people creating their own path are trying to figure out a way for the government to get the hell out of their way! If you want to know why the country we live in today is so divided, so segmented, so sharply different, then look no further than the thin red line which has been drawn between two parties which have equally contributed to this mess. If you look closely enough, you'll see millions of Americans standing on that line, unwilling to cross to either side because they're smart enough not to trust anyone associated with the words; Republican, Democrat, Political, Party, President, Congressman, Senator, or Government.

The unfortunate part, those people will continue to stand there, will continue to be drowned out by the endless noise both sides make at each other. And while they stand there, the last bit of hope pragmatic Americans hold, is that everyone else leaves at least something left, so that we can pick up the pieces and start over after the rest of you have finished trying to destroy everything else. Then again, even if the pragmatic ones do fix this country, I'm sure someone else will come along to remind us, it wasn't really us in the first place.  It never is.

The $300 Billion Dollar Question

What’s the $300 Billion Dollar Question on everyone’s minds after last night’s epic evening of television programming? And no, I’m not referring to the new NFL, where defense has been rendered illegal http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/gameflash/2011/09/08/4393_boxscore.html?xid=si_topstories.

I’m talking about President Obama’s speech to a joint session of Congress. And the $300 Billion Dollar question is, “Will his new jobs plan save a single job other than his own?”

Now, before all my progressive friends turn against me and think I’m just bashing the President again, please allow me to finish. I commend the President for acting last night. I commend him for being stern and acting like a Commander and Chief. Furthermore, I commend him for laying out a proposal that, as he stated last night, “Should be passed right away.” But here’s the thing… With a Republican controlled House eager to cooperate with him on nothing short of his own resignation, does the White House really think this jobs plan has a snowball’s chance in hell of passing in the next 14 months?

I’d like to think of this $300 Billion Dollar plan as a stump speech which will ignite Obama’s re-election bid. Politically, it’s a savvy way to take the fight back to the Republicans. It places the ball of the economy in their court, if one were to assume the plan would actually work. And by actually work I mean, executed properly, not loaded with pork like a Christmas Tree Bill, and have the appropriations get down to the people who need them.

One can only assume that in this political climate this bill will not pass. It gives the President a launching pad for reelection, but what then? If reelected, will he go back to laying down and taking what the GOP gives him? Will this ambitious jobs plan disappear 14 months after it was originally introduced much like his promises to leave Afghanistan? And what happens to the 14 million plus Americans who need a middle class stimulus now?!

Well I’ve got a suggestion. In his time in office, this President has issued a record number of Executive Orders (86). So why not do the same thing to directly create jobs?

FDR did it in 1935. President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 7034 appropriating $4.8 billion for the Works Progress Administration (WPA). This measure went on to employ $3.4 million Americans. The Money was already appropriated by congress thru the New Deal. President Obama finds himself in a similar situation. The money is already there and Republicans cannot block it!

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act in 2008 created what we today know as TARP. Well the purpose of TARP was to promote economic growth and to do it by keeping people in their homes and by creating “jobs”. $700 billion had been spent and according to this very administration and most of the folks who co-authored or voted for the bill (in an effort to sell it as a good idea of course), most of it has been PAID BACK to the tax payers. If such is the case, and the funds have already been appropriated and now returned, could TARP not be used to do what is was actually intended to do? This if you believe the bill, was to create jobs.

The President this very day could take those funds and issue an Executive Order creating what could be as many as 8 million jobs. Funny math you say? NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND.

The average cost of employing a worker who has a base of 50k is about 62k a year. It would cost roughly 600 billion to employ 10 million people. Roughly 8 million jobs could be created when you shave off the additional 100 billion returned from the 700 billion in TARP funding to offer those “tax incentives” for businesses hiring people who are from the military or have been looking for work 6 months or longer.

And even if you think those numbers are incredibly ambitious after overanalyzing the numbers, can it really be less then what POTUS offered up to the American people last night?

The only difference:

A.) There’s no political posturing involved

B.) We don’t have to wait for him to take this plan on the campaign trail

C.) The Money is already there.

Here’s the thing, doing something like this involves real leadership. The economy is not just a term we use loosely to explain the woes of our country, or at least it shouldn’t be. The economy is a barometer for what every American’s dinner table, bank account, savings, retirement fund, children’s college fund, and health looks like. This is a direct solution that can be applied today. It doesn’t need a campaign trail or a winding road through filibustering conservatives to reach its destination. If you think this solution works, speak out, let your voice be heard, and let’s skip the next 14 months of talk.

In the event that this jobs plan somehow does pass, well… I’ll eat my shoe right here on this blog. Best part about that? It will be a new shoe courtesy of the $$$ in my pocket thanks to having a job!

SO BRING ON THE JOBS Mr. President. But, let’s not act like you can’t issue this from the comfort of the Oval. FDR did it and they put him on a coin. You like coins? Because I sure as hell do!

April 8th and The Collective Sacrifice

April 8th is rapidly approaching which marks the deadline for a budget to be reached. Without an agreement or extension of the deadline, the United States Government will shut down putting thousands of government employees out of work and bring operations in Washington to a standstill.

So how did we get here?... Well there’s a number of factors. We can look back to the trickle down Reaganomics, to the Home Ownership Society and dramatic increase in War spending while still cutting taxes under George W. Bush’s eight year tenure. Starting there would be a good bet.

Since then, we’ve seen spending continue to increase under the Obama administration. And war spending is now at an all time high. Even with combat operations technically over in Iraq, the United States has persisted on committing resources to Afghanistan and now Libya. On March 15 the House of Representatives approved yet another short term spending bill, one that would make $6 billion worth of cuts but otherwise keep the federal government funded through April 8. This continuing resolution appears to be the last line in the sand before a full government shutdown on the 8th if no agreement is come to by both parties.

The federal government posted its largest ever monthly deficit in February with preliminary estimates put it at a whopping $223 billion. February’s monthly deficit is larger than the entire 2007 deficit. When funding provided by the stimulus is taken into account, spending increased by an eye-popping 84 percent since January 2009!

The President ran on a plethora of agendas. Peace was one of them. Remember, this is a man who was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. And yet, the military industrial complex in Washington continues to wage war around the globe at a mighty expense to the American Tax Payer.

To be fair (before all my progressive followers jump all over me), lets take a look at the amount of money that has been spent on the Iraq War alone from the first moment of our glorious Shock & Awe Campaign in Iraq through November of 2010. About $900 billion of US taxpayers' funds were spent. Of that money more than $9 billion dollars has gone Lost & Unaccounted for! With Dick Cheney’s New Year’s baby; Halliburton overcharging the Pentagon as much as $1.4 billion.

After the Bush administration made their exit from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and The Obama Administration stepped in, the massive spending at the Pentagon continued. For the Fiscal Year of 2012 the Pentagon will have to struggle along with just $719 billion dollars. And while the Tea Party and members of the GOP call for drastic cuts in “wasteful spending”. The White House along with the support of the GOP will be handing over another $719 billion dollars to the Pentagon.

The military industrial complex in Washington won’t stand to lose anything in the budget cuts that must happen in order to prevent a shutdown on Thursday of the Federal Government, but let me tell you what will be cut, what will be affected, what will feel the pinch. Programs for the poor and working class (BIG SURPRISE!). Assistance with home heating, community services, student loans, Head Start Programs (which shouldn’t be a problem since we’re already leading the globe in educaton, RIGHT???), reduced funding for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (otherwise known as WIC) by $752 million, literally taking food from low-income women and children, benefits for our veterans, benefits for seniors, new social security claims won’t be processed, food and job safety inspections will be put on hold, government infrastructure cuts, and by the way; if you have yet to file your taxes buckle up because those may be delayed as well.

Nearly half of all federal funds on the table to help the working poor, single parents and low income families will most likely be cut! A government shutdown or a passage of the proposed budget cuts will hurt the Latino community especially hard!

Currently, the unemployment rate among Latinos sits at 11.3%. A shut down would kill those benefits. And the Head Start programs service 400,000 Latino Children. In regards to the WIC program; 59% of Hispanic families with children under the age of five participate in the program. The proposed cuts also endanger Hispanic Health Services. Hispanics are still the largest group among the uninsured in America, with 38.9% going without coverage in 2010.

Finally, let’s talk about the group of Latinos that are talked about the least when they should be celebrated most of all. I’m talking about our brave Latinos who served this country honorably. Proposed cuts and/or a Government shutdown would cut benefits to 1.14 million Latino Veterans. The Proposed cuts target homeless veterans by eliminating funding for new HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program.

A Government Shutdown guarantees an immediate yet temporary disruption of these services. And if the proposed cuts are approved and the budget is passed the way it stands now then these disruptions become permanent changes. Now I understand cuts need to be made and everyone needs to sacrifice.... We’ve heard it all before.

"But most of the time, the people who make statements like these are the ones who stand to lose the least."

The United States of America has been and always will be a nation built on the backs of the working poor and minorities. History shows it to be true. Oftentimes we stand up and vilify immigrants, minorities, the poor and yet at the same time turn a blind eye to them when its time to make these so-called “sacrifices” for the betterment of the cause.

Have you ever asked yourself, why does the "betterment of the cause argument" only apply in America when its time for these groups to sacrifice? Doesn’t it seem a little upside down to you, that we continue to fund wars in the trillions of dollars and yet are willing to let some of our own starve at home under the shroud of collective patriotism and sacrifice?

I’m not going to pontificate like so many other talking heads and tell you that writing your congressman or senator will make a difference at this late hour. It may or it may not. What I will tell you is that real change in America starts in your communities. Real Change in America starts when Latinos organize and say with one voice, We are 50 million strong, We are American, and we’ve sacrificed enough!

This message applies to more than just my friends in the Hispanic Community. If you are a single mother of any race, color or creed working several jobs to put your child through school, if you a veteran who served this country honorably and now find your benefits being held in limbo like poker chips in the great casino on the Hill, if you are senior living on a fixed income wondering how you will pay for your medication in April, then please understand that the anger you feel is shared by others just like you.

Focus that energy in the direction of change. If the Tea Party has shown America anything, its that much can be gained from organizing and refusing to take no for an answer. Now imagine what could be done if a group of informed Americans organized and did the same? Progress.

#Winning!

My deepest apologies to all of you out there in TV land for such a long gap between our last correspondence and today. This is Matt Topolski coming to you with a long overdue update. So lets get down to business.

In the next few days I’ll be making an exciting announcement about a new project I’ll begin working on. Its one that will give me the creative freedom to branch outside just the political realm and really give all of you a sense of what I’m really passionate about, which is broadcasting in general and entertainment. Once things are official, we’ll have a big-to-do roll out and all that good stuff so just sit tight. In closing however; I want to thank so many people which have supported me over the last few months on the television show, the radio show and all the other little ventures I’ve been a part of. I’m excited about the future but moreover I’m very lucky and tremendously grateful to have so many amazing people surrounding me. Life is good. I feel like I’m winning. And speaking of winning! Onto a new little segment I’ll be doing for A Matter of Opinion.

The Not-So Special Comment Segement: Charlie Sheen versus Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker

If the last few weeks of headlines have shown us anything, its that little is gained by not keeping it real with America. Being elected under the promise of balancing budgets by cutting wasteful spending and then including teacher’s pay, government employee’s benefits and collective bargain rights in the category of wasteful spending will lead to… well a REVOLT.

Meanwhile, we vilify not the villain, but the guy who keeps it real. Charlie Sheen.
Sheen is an actor. Not someone who’s responsible for public policy, the rights of workers, or the functionality of government. And yet, HE has been the subject of America’s ever growing appetite for the irrelevant. Meanwhile the Governor of a State in America that has successfully managed to have half of his legislature walk out on him. His schools let out for the summer… in FEBRUARY! And a revolution outside the steps of the very capital he occupies that would make even the Egyptians proud, gets little coverage in the national media. Sure we talk about him during roundtables with political pundits and so-called Hill Experts. But outside of that, who’s really paying attention to Scott Walker and the GOP? Are you?

Who even cares if GOP doesn’t back off their promise to tank funding for millions of people and hundreds of programs in an effort to reclaim their own moral code of fiscal conservatism? Who even cares that a nationwide shutdown of our government is imminent?

Why should you care when you’ve got Charlie Sheen’s b*tchin rockstar lifestyle to compare yours to?!

Don’t care. Because in the midst of all this coverage of an actor with a drug problem, the blood of a tiger running though his veins, and the ability to just keep winning. He’ll continue to enjoy his life. Because as crazy as it may seem to you, Charlie Sheen keeps it real. It might not be what YOU want to hear. Hell it might not be what anyone wants to hear. But its honest. It’s crazy. But its honest.

When asked if he was concerned because one of the women partying at his house may have died of a drug overdose. He responded: what’s that got to do with me? He honestly had no idea what it had to do with him, and he kept it real. And in reality, whether it did have something to do with him or not is irrelevant. Because people can choose whether or not they party with a guy that by all conventional wisdom takes it a little further than most can or would even dare to. He has a reputation as a guy who will turn it up, and if you’re not ready for the ride you might loose yourself in the moment. *Shouts to B-Rabbit*.

But what about Scott Walker? What do we know about him? Well not a whole lot. Because Scott Walker like most conventional politicians will hide behind an intentionally ambiguous record and use catch phrases like, "If elected we’ll have to make tough decisions."

But the bottom line is, he will never be the guy that makes tough decisions. Because, making tough decisions means walking out on your job to stand up for what you believe in. Making tough decisions means; standing in the cold for weeks or longer if necessary to preserve a Union’s right to negotiate fair labor practices and wages. Making tough decisions means; being deadly honest with the people who look to you for leadership.

Fortunately for us, Charlie Sheen is only in charge of himself.
Unfortunately, Scott Walker is in charge of Wisconsin.
And right now, neither one of them is in control.

You can pay special attention to the Charlie Sheen revolution. For all its twisted comedy and entertainment value its better than Two and a Half Men could have ever been. But there’s another revolution taking place in America. And if we fail to cover it as a country, if we fail to pay attention to it as a people, and if we most importantly fail to hold our political figures accountable for the reasons why its happening, well… NONE of us will be winning!
